Big wave surfing can be a dangerous and thrilling sport.Big wave surfing is a discipline within surfing where experienced surfers paddle into or are towed into waves that are at least 20 feet (6.2 m) high (1). These waves are typically found in locations known for their big waves, such as Mavericks in California and Nazaré in Portugal (1). Surfers use specialized surfboards called "guns" or towboards to tackle these massive waves that are literally the size of multiple story buildings.
In order to survive this sport, surfers need to have excellent skills and experience in order to navigate and ride these collasal waves. The challenge lies in timing and positioning, as well as the physical and mental strength required to handle the power and force of the waves. They are surfing avalanches.
In recent years, big wave surfers have been pushing the limits and setting records for riding some of the largest waves ever recorded. For example, Sebastian Steudtner set a record by riding a wave that measured 86 feet (26.21 meters) in Nazaré, Portugal (2).
